Georgia lineman favoring Vanderbilt

Lance Helton is a big OL from Washington County High School down in kaolin country. He's still in search of his first offer but a couple of schools are showing heavy interest.

"Vanderbilt, Florida and Georgia Tech are showing me some interest and they are my favorite schools. Vandy is recruiting me the hardest at this time," Lance Helton said.

One school has a bit of an advantage at this point.

"Vandy is my favorite school. I love the academics and they're really doing great things with that program. They tell me I can play early and that's big also. My mom is a teacher and she puts a heavy emphasis on academics so it's a very good fit there."

Why does he like the Gators and Yellow Jackets?

Florida: "I really like Coach Meyer. He did nice things with that program at Utah. Also their OL coach out there did some really nice things and he's now at Florida also."

Georgia Tech: "It's close to home. I've talked to Coach Gailey and Coach Smith a few times. At Tech, there's a great tradition there. They go to a bowl game every year."

Helton (6-4, 304) recently returned from a visit to Nashville.

"I just got back from a visit at Vanderbilt and it went really well. Good gracious, they just buttered me up real nice. We had a complication with the film so they really haven't had a chance to see me play yet. They want to see my playoff game against North Hall and they said they'll probably offer me after that."

What are the recruiting factors he'll base his decision upon?

"Academics is pretty much at the top of my list. Also, just good football. I want an opportunity an opportunity to play."

WACO has a long tradition of being one of the top weight lifting programs in the state and Lance is following in that tradition as well.

"My squat is around 550. I've done 3 reps of 480. I bench right around 330lbs and clean 275." Top Stories
