Mullins, De la Osa lead Vanderbilt past UT, 2-1

Nashville, Tenn. – Freshman shortstop Dominic de la Osa hit a walk-off solo home run over the left centerfield wall in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Vanderbilt Commodores to a 2-1 victory over the #25 Tennessee Volunteers Saturday in cold conditions at Hawkins Field. The game was delayed for seven minutes due to rain showers in the Nashville area with temperatures dropping into the 30's late in the game.

Junior left-hander Ryan Mullins pitched his first complete game of the season and remained undefeated at 5-0. Mullins allowed just one run on five hits and struck out seven. It is his second complete game against the Volunteers following a 2-0 four hit shutout in Knoxville last season.

The Volunteers scored first in the top of the third. Leadoff man Josh Alley drew a walk and moved to second on a bunt down the first base line by Eric King. Chase Headley hit a sacrifice bunt down the first base line advancing both Alley and King. With runners on second and third, Eli Iorg hit a ground out scoring Alley for a 1-0 UT lead.

The Commodores tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Antoan Richardson hit a ground out to second with bases loaded scoring Brian Hernandez. Hernandez led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single through the left side by de la Osa. Aaron Garza singled through the left side to load the bases for Richardson.

The Volunteers threatened in the top of the ninth. With one away, Edmundson hit a standup double to the right centerfield gap and was replaced by Rob Fitzgerald (pinch runner). Rivera then hit a shot to Mullins at the mound who ran down Fitzgerald in the third base path for the second out. With Daniel Beasley at bat, Rivera stole second and moved to third when catcher Brian Hernandez's throw was short at second and rolled to centerfield. Mullins then struck out Daniel Beasley looking to end the inning leaving Rivera at third.

That set the stage for de la Osa who was the leadoff hitter for the Commodores in the bottom of the ninth. De la Osa took a 1-1 pitch over the left centerfield wall – his sixth on the season - to give the Commodores the victory and tie the series at 1-1.

The last victory for the Commodores over Tennessee at Hawkins Field was a two-run walkoff homerun in the ninth by Worth Scott giving VU a 6-5 win and trip to the SEC Tournament in 2003.

Vanderbilt outhit Tennessee 8-5 with sophomore left fielder Aaron Garza going 3-3 at the plate. De la Osa was 2-4, while Hernandez, Richardson and Tony Mansolino each totaled one hit. Each team left seven men on base.

Sean Watson earned the loss (5-3) going the final 1.1 innings and giving up just one hit. Freshman James Adkins went 6.2 innings and gave up one run on seven hits in the no decision. He struck out eight and walked one.

Freshman left-hander David Price is on the mound for the Commodores Sunday at 1 pm.
