Men's Hoops: Vanderbilt fizzles again

The cold shooting Commodores lost to Mississippi State in a game that almost mirrored the previous one.

Just as in their previous game, the Commodores jumped out to an early lead. Chuck Moore scored on a jumper 1:30 into the game to give Vanderbilt a 2-0 lead. From there on it was all Mississippi State. State, led by All-SEC candidate Mario Austin, led 13-6 with 10 minutes left in the half. With four minutes remaining the lead had grown to 10, at 26-16. A jumper by Derrick Zimmerman put the Dogs up 30-16 at the half.

The second half was just a continuation of the first. The Bulldogs biggest lead was 27 points at 66-39 with 1:16 remaining in the game.

Vanderbilt was plagued by missed shots and turnovers throughout the game. For the game Vandy was just 2 of 20 from 3-point land for a horrible 10%. The Dores managed to connect on just 16 of 51 field goals for 31.4%. In one bright spot, Vanderbilt forced 24 MSU turnovers. Vanderbilt was man handled under the basket and was out rebounded 41-19 by the men from Mississippi. A lot of the difference in rebounding had to do with the 35 missed shots by Vanderbilt.

After the game Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings had this to say, "This is not very much fun. Believe it or not, I thought we played better tonight than we did against South Carolina. We're a fragile group right now. We're having trouble passing the ball to guys that are ten feet away. We're not playing with any confidence. I don¹t know that I've ever been around a team that's this frail and un confident. We had a number of good looks that didn¹t go in, and then we started to hang our heads."

MSU Coach Rick Stansbury added that "I thought when we closed on them defensively we forced them to rush their shots. Anytime you hold Vanderbilt to only two three-pointers, you know you had a good defensive effort."

Brendan Plavich was the leading scorer for Vanderbilt with 8 points. Jason Holwerda added 7 points for the Commodores. Matt Freije was Vandy leading rebounder with 5. State was led in scoring by Mario Austin with 23.

Vanderbilt falls to 14-12 overall and 4-9 in the SEC. The Dores next travel on Saturday for a game against their in-state rivals, the surging Tennessee Volunteers.
