Georgia tops Vanderbilt, 6-2; takes series

Athens, Ga. – Georgia scored four runs in the seventh inning including two runs on a Commodore error to defeat Vanderbilt, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Foley Field. The Bulldogs took the series over the Commodores, 2-1. Vanderbilt is now 30-16 and 11-13 in the SEC while Georgia is 25-21 and 9-14 in the SEC.

With two away in the first inning, Mike Baxter hit a single up the middle and stole second. Brian Hernandez drew a walk and Dominic de la Osa hit a double to right field scoring Baxter for a 1-0 Commodore lead.

With two away in the fourth inning, Josh Morris got the first hit of the game for the Bulldogs – a solo home run over the right centerfield wall to tie the game at 1-1. That at-bat was after an almost 10-minute discussion between the officials and both coaches about a play involving Kyle Keen. Keen was eventually ruled out after touching the ball in play while out of the batter's box. Matt Zeller ended the inning with a diving catch running towards the fence.

The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Bobby Felmy reached on a stand-up double. Jason Jacobs hit a deep shot in the middle of the field and out-ran a Warner Jones throw to first for a single. Bobby Felmy rounded third and Mike Baxter's throw to catch Felmy off base got past Alex Feinberg, allowing Felmy to score the go-ahead run.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-1 lead. Joey Side led off with a solo homerun over the left field wall to extend the Bulldog lead to two, 3-1. Senior right-hander Jeff Sues replaced David Price on the mound and after striking out Derek Smith, Joshua Fields hit his first homerun of the season over the right field wall (4-1). McDaniel drew a walk, stole second and after Dunn drew a walk, Cody Crowell replaced Sues on the mound with runners on first and second and one out. Crowell hit Felmy on the first pitch to load the bases. Jacobs hit a grounder to Crowell who threw out McDaniel at home. Right-hander Michael Wagner replaced Crowell with the bases loaded and two away. Pinch hitter Jonathan Wyatt hit a grounder to Wagner who overthrew first base allowing two runs to score for a 6-1 Bulldog lead.

With two outs and Warner Jones on first, Mike Baxter hit a standup RBI double to left centerfield on a full count to cut the Bulldog lead to four, 6-2.

Stephen Shao drew a walk with one away in the ninth inning, but Mitchell Boggs struck out Rucker Taylor and Antoan Richardson to end the game.

Price allowed three runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out four and walked one. Sues faced four batters giving up three runs, one earned, while allowing one hit. Crowell faced two batters and did not allow hit. Wagner pitched the last 1.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out one.

Brooks Brown (2-2) picked up the win allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two. Boggs pitched the final two innings striking out four while allowing one hit.

Baxter finished the game 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Feinberg went 2-for-4 for the Commodores.
