Vanderbilt smothers Kentucky, 8-0

Lexington, Ky. – Jensen Lewis pitched a two-hit complete game shutout in an 8-0 victory over Kentucky Friday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium. In his first career complete game shutout, he struck out a career-high 13 batters and improved to 8-2 on the season. It's the first time Kentucky has been shutout in 105 games.

The Commodores totaled 16 hits in the contest, including 12 hits off Kentucky starter Kalen Gibson. Gibson went 4.0 innings and gave up seven runs in the loss (4-3).

Vanderbilt took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Alex Feinberg walked and moved to second when Antoan Richardson was hit by a pitch. With one away, Mike Baxter hit a two-run double to left centerfield for a 2-0 Commodore lead. Brian Hernandez followed with a single through the left side scoring Baxter.

The Commodores added four runs in the fourth inning off seven hits. Dominic de la Osa began the inning with a single over third base and moved to third when Matt Zeller hit a single to right centerfield. Aaron Garza singled up the middle scoring de la Osa and moving Zeller to second. Both advanced a base when Stephen Shao hit a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher for the first out of the inning. Feinberg singled to left center field and advanced to third on a throw to home to catch Aaron Garza out from the left fielder after Zeller scored. Richardson reached on a single moving Feinberg to third base. Feinberg scored on a Baxter single and Richardson scored on a Hernandez single to take a 7-0 lead.

Vanderbilt added one run in the ninth inning when Warner Jones drove in Richardson.

JP Lowen collected Kentucky's first hit of the game in the fifth inning with two away when he hit a single through the right side.

Alex Jordan replaced Gibson on the mound in the fifth inning and gave up one run on four hits while striking out three.

Baxter, Hernandez and Garza each totaled three hits. Baxter had three RBI in the game.

Ryan Mullins is on the mound for the Commodores Saturday in a 2 pm ET start.
