Baseball: Vandy tops Iowa 2-1

NASHVILLE- Freshman left-hander Jeremy Sowers (2-0) struck out 12 and surrendered only three hits in 8.0 innings of work as the Vanderbilt Commodores edged Iowa, 2-1 Saturday, March 2, at Hawkins Field in second action at the Music City Challenge. Vanderbilt moves to 7-2 while Iowa falls to 1-1.

Catcher Jonathan Douillard gave Vanderbilt a 1-0 advantage in the fifth inning when his RBI-double down the left field line scored designated hitter John Prothro. Left fielder John Kaye extended the Commodore lead to 2-0 in the seventh with a leadoff solo home run to left center field.

Sowers, named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, was impressive in his Hawkins Field debut. The freshman from Louisville, Ky., struck out seven Hawkeyes looking and allowed just two singles through the infield and a double down the left field line.

Right hander Dean Bennett worked the ninth inning, earning his fourth save of the year, despite an eventful inning. Hawkeye third baseman Ian Mattiace lead off the inning with a double to left field. He scored two batters later on an RBI-single by designated hitter Andy Jansen. Right fielder John Paul Cappellano followed with a single to left field pushing Jansen to third base. After second baseman Luis Andrulonis sacrificed Cappellano to second base, Bennett got pinch hitter Nate Yoho to strike out looking to end the game.

Vanderbilt plays Saint Louis Sunday at 1 p.m. before leaving for a week-long road trip through Florida next week. Right hander Steven Faulkner is schedule to pitch for the Commodores on Sunday. Top Stories
