Men's Hoops: Vanderbilt vs Pitt, 1988

VandyMania takes a look at the 1988 NCAA battle between Vanderbilt and Pitt. #7 seeded Vanderbilt used a spectacular rally of pull off a huge upset in #2 seeded Pitt.

With Vanderbilt trailing 69-63, Barry Goheen nailed two 3-pointers in the last five seconds of regulation to tie the game at 69.  Then in overtime and despite the fact that their 7 foot star center, Will Perdue was on the bench with 5 fouls, the Commodores outscored the powerful Pitt Panthers 11-5 to win 80 to 74.

Goheen led all scorers with 22 points.  He hit 2 of 3 three pointers on that memorable day.  Barry Booker, Vanderbilt's other three point bomber, was 3 of 3 from beyond the arc.

The win shocked the college basketball world.  Vanderbilt went on to fall to the eventual National Champion Kansas, 77-64.  The Jayhawks featured All-American Danny Manning.  

Goheen's spectacular performance forever etched his name in the hearts of Vanderbilt fans everywhere.
