Interview: Chris Maultsby, pitcher

VandyMania recently interviewed senior baseball pitcher Chris Maultsby about pitching at Vanderbilt and the progress of the Vanderbilt baseball program during his career.

VM: How do you feel so far with how you've been pitching?

CM: I feel like I've made a total turn around from where I've been the past two years.   With the help of Coach Johnson I think the whole pitching staff has turned around and come into where we are supposed to be.  I think we've all thrown well as far as the season goes.  You can tell by the record, we are obviously doing something right. I think everything is clicking well right now.

VM:  What do you think are some of the things you've done in practice that have helped you to be a better pitcher?

CM: I think just the main focus on arm care.  Coach Johnson really harps on arm care and of course drill work.  We have certain drills that we all work on depending on what we need.  I think just the whole thing; drill work, arm care, it's kinda like the whole surplus of things has really made a difference.

VM: What in particular do you mean by "arm care"?  What are some of the things you do to take care of your arm?

CM:  We have certain drills like the twins work out program that is arm exercises with weights, we do ace theraband arm care stuff, we do a specific arm care where we use weighted medicine balls.  Do a lot of abs and upper body.   We do a lot of running to back that up.

VM:  So you're not talking about ice or something like that, you are talking about exercises.

CM: Right.  We are in great shape.  We set a goal at the beginning of the season that we want to be the most in shape staff in the SEC.  I think if we are not, we are right there by the top.

VM: What do you think about this new facility?

CM: This is great.  When I first came here it wasn't very much to brag about. Over the last two years it has really stepped up.   It's probably one of the top parks in the SEC.   It just a great field. It's really great to be able to spend your last season on it.

VM: What are your thoughts heading into SEC play?

CM: Ready for it.  Excited about it. I think we are hitting on all gears right now.  We are just ready to get in there and play with the big boys.

VM: Any chance you'll hit the minor leagues?

CM: I don't know.  We'll see what happens.  We'll take it from there.

VM: Let's say the minor leagues doesn't happen.  What are your plans.

CM:   Not really sure yet.  I haven't really thought about it.  We'll see what happens this summer and take it from there.
