DL/TE Prospect favors Vanderbilt

The Vanderbilt staff continues to recruit quality, versatile players who can help the Commodore program. VandyMania talked with another fine prospect who could help Vanderbilt on either side of the ball.

DT, Matthew Mauldin (6-3, 270, 4.89 forty)

VandyMania.com: What is the primary position you play?
Matthew Mauldin: I play tight end and defensive end.

VandyMania.com: Can you tell us some of your junior season highlights and postseason honors?
Matthew Mauldin: I got defensive end All-State by the Coaches Association and I also got selected All-State tight end. I had 5 touchdowns, close to 500 yards receiving, on 19 catches. I think I had 79 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, and 11 or 12 sacks.

VandyMania.com: What do you feel is your biggest strengths as a player?
Matthew Mauldin: I believe my biggest strength would be my strength. I'm pretty strong and at the high school level that has helped me out tremendously. Against the people we play, I'm pretty much as strong or stronger than the opponents. I guess my speed, I love my speed.

VandyMania.com: What schools are currently recruiting you?
Matthew Mauldin: Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, LSU, Auburn . . . I got a couple letters from Texas, Miami, and Florida State. West Virginia has recruited me. I've gotten letters from Notre Dame.

VandyMania.com: Who has offered you scholarships?
Matthew Mauldin: Just Vanderbilt.

VandyMania.com: What schools do you think you are leaning towards right now?
Matthew Mauldin: Vanderbilt. I like that school's academic programs. They are ranked 18th in the nation academically and I love that. I love that they are giving me a chance.

VandyMania.com: What coach is recruiting you from Vanderbilt?
Matthew Mauldin: Coach Kenny Carter.

VandyMania.com: How are they telling you you'd be utilized at Vandy?
Matthew Mauldin: They are looking at me as a defensive end, defensive tackle, offensive line and tight end.

VandyMania.com: So when do you plan on making a choice?
Matthew Mauldin: I'm just going to pray about it.
