Football: Practice Highlights

The Vanderbilt Commodores completed their final spring practice session before Saturday's Black and Gold game.

  • Gold jerseys were awarded to Robert Dinwiddie, Jay Cutler, and Nick Getter.
  • Dinwiddie was hurt during individual position teaching. Possibly a knee injury.
  • Rushen Jones had the hit of the day on Ronald Hatcher. Hatcher was in the flat, he caught the ball and as soon as he turned around he was run over.
  • Hatcher had two long runs. Quarterback Jay Cutler kept on an option for a big gain.
  • Cutler had a nice long pass to M.J. Garrett.
  • Head Coach Bobby Johnson appeared to blow a gasket with the defense. He threw his hat down and kicked the ball and then turned around and yelled some more. It was the loudest and maddest he's been all spring.
  • Wide receiver Dan Stricker was in a sling, not dressed out.
  • The team did goal line drills, putting the ball on the 5-yard line and giving the offense a series to try and score. The offense scored easily every time. The offense only had to go to 3rd down once or twice.
  • Fullback Bara Cola had a great block down on the goal line where he almost flipped a defender. All of the coaches and players went crazy congratulating him.
  • Saturday is the Black and Gold game, which concludes spring practice. Gates open at 1:00 p.m. for the Scrimmage, which is free to the public. The event includes a brief autograph session with Commodore players on the field, from 1:30-1:55 p.m. A practice and stretching will begin at 2:00. The scrimmage will follow at 2:55 and end at 4:00.
