Senior guard Chuck Moore was named Most Valuable Player for the 2001-02 season at Vanderbilt's men's basketball banquet, held Tuesday night at the Stadium Club.
Moore, a team captain, was second on the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game, and led the team in minutes played. Moore was the Commodores' leading scorer in 9 games this past season and scored in double figures in 22 of 32 games. He finished his four-year career with 1,073 points.
Moore also received the Defensive Player of the Year award, the Leadership Award, and the Assist Award. Moore also shared the Captain's Award along with fellow seniors Darius Coulibaly and Sam Howard.
Sophomore forward Matt Freije, who was named Third-Team All-SEC, was presented the team's Rebounder Award after finishing as the Commodores' leading rebounder with 5.1 boards per game.
Freshman Corey Smith was named the team's Most Improved Player, while freshman Martin Schnedlitz received the Scholar-Athlete Award. The Coaches' Award went to both Schnedlitz and Coulibaly.
Former Commodore player and assistant coach Jerry Southwood received the Ken Hudgens Award for his dedication and loyalty to the Vanderbilt athletic department. Southwood has twice served as president of the Rebounders, the men's basketball alumni organization. This past year, Southwood served as an advisor for the new Hall of Champions project and was instrumental in helping produce the video, "50 Years of Memorial Magic".
