Jackson Academy (MS) duo visits Vandy

Over 40 prep football prospects from throughout the southeast and nation visited Vanderbilt Saturday for the LSU game. Among them were two rugged prospects from Jackson Academy in Mississippi.

Senior fullback Benji Maher (photo at right) is considered one of the top fullback prospects in Mississippi. As a junior, Maher had 66 rushes for 276 yards and 7 touchdowns and 22 receptions for 518 yards and 8 touchdowns.

"I had a great time," Maher said of his visit, "They didn't win but they looked like they had a pretty good ball club. When we got there we ate and some of the coaches talked. Then they introduced some of the redshirt freshmen. Then we went to the ballgame." said Maher

"Vanderbilt hasn't offered me yet. I just came on an unofficial visit. I'm also being recruited by Alabama, Mississippi State and Ole Miss." said the 6-0, 250 pound fullback who has great speed for his size at 4.81 in the forty. Maher benches 315 pounds.

Junior Chaz Ramsey, who is considered one of the elite members of Mississippi's class of 2007, is a powerful lineman for the 6-0 Raiders who recently defeated Memphis-Briarcrest 27-13. At 6-4, 255 Ramsey already possesses good size for a lineman. A regular in the weight room with teammate Maher, Ramsey can already bench press over 300 pounds and squat 465 pounds.

"I was really impressed. I really liked the academics they have going up there. I got to see where they eat at after practice and their study area. . . They showed us the study area they use after practice and told us they have tutors available. " said Ramsey.

When asked if Vanderbilt is a school he is seriously considering Chaz replied, "I am. I really like their academics and am going to try to get a good degree." Chaz, who is an honors math student at Jackson Academy, plans to a math related major.
