Klimesova, a 6'2 forward, was chosen by the Fever in the first selection of the second round as the 17th overall pick. Danker, a 6'1 guard/forward, was selected in the fourth round.
During her career at Vanderbilt, Klimesova was a two-time first All-SEC selection and an AP honorable mention All-American in 2002. For her career she averaged 14.1 ppg and 7.3 rebounds per game. She finished her Vanderbilt career 4th on the all-time scoring list with 1,867 points and is the all-time leader in minutes played with 4,249 during her career. Danker averaged 8.6 ppg and finished her Vanderbilt career with a .408 3-point field goal percentage, second only to Julie Powell in the Commodore record books.
Klimesova and Danker join several faces familiar to Vanderbilt fans. Georgia's Tawana McDonald was also drafted by the Fever. Tamika Catchings was a star for the Tennessee Lady Vols before joining the Fever last year. Catchings missed all of last season as due to a torn ACL suffered during her senior year of college. Assistant Coach Julie Plank was an assistant at Vanderbilt from 1997-99. Forward Vicki Hall played for the Nashville Noise during their abbreviated tenure in the ABL.
WNBA Training camp begins on April 29, preseason games begin on May 9, and the regular season opens May 25. Traditionally the WNBA works on an individual basis with graduating college seniors to make arrangements to accommodate the end of classes, final exams and graduation.
As training camp begins, WNBA teams are allowed to carry up to 18 players on their training camp rosters. By the beginning of preseason games, the rosters must be trimmed to 15 players. Opening day rosters are limited to 11 active players and a maximum of 2 players on the injured reserve list.
The longer the WNBA has been existence, the more competitive the fight for a final roster cut has become. In last year's draft, 13 out of 16 second round draftees stuck with their teams for the season. Attrition was higher in the second round, with only 3 third round draftees and 2 fourth round draftees surviving the final roster cuts. If a draftee is waived, she can be picked up by another team, or, after her contract is terminated, she can sign on elsewhere as a free agent.
For Vanderbilt fans thinking "Road Trip!", the Fever's only preseason home game will take place on Wednesday, May 15, at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at 7 p.m. Regular season home games are:
Sat. June 1 Detroit 7:00 p.m.
