S.C. Gunslinger favoring VU and UNC

The Wildcats were the first school to offer strong armed Columbia (SC) native BJ Phillips a scholarship this summer. However, questions concerning the coaching staff have caused the Wildcats to fall behind for his services. Read the latest on another UK prospect worried about Rich Brooks' future.

B.J. Phillips, a 6-foot-5, 225-pounder from Columbia (S.C.) Spring Valley, has evaluated each of his five scholarship offers and narrowed his list of favorite schools to a solid three. He has set official visits for two of three and is awaiting word on a third.

"There's no new schools or offers," Phillips said. "I took unofficial visits to Kentucky, Vanderbilt and North Carolina, in the past few months."

And what were the lasting impressions of his unofficial visits?

"I liked the stadium and the fans at Kentucky," Phillips stated first. "At UNC, I liked the school and in particular, the location. It compares to where I live now." And finally, Vanderbilt. "I like the coaches up at Vanderbilt. They seem like a really close staff."

As for his favorites? "Vandy and UNC are my favorites," Phillips added, "UK is up there, but mainly Vandy and North Carolina."

The Palmetto state gunslinger has set up two of three official visits to his current leaders. "I've got a visit to North Carolina set up for November 5th, when they play Boston College," Phillips said. "I've got another one set up for Kentucky on November 26th when Kentucky plays Tennessee. I'm in the process of scheduling Vanderbilt, but there is no date yet."

The biggest thing on Phillips' mind remains the future. That factor alone has lifted UNC and Vanderbilt ahead of the Wildcats.

"Mainly the direction of the program," he interrated. "The likelihood of coaching staff being around for a long time is important. Right now, the staff could change at Kentucky. They could interest me on the official visit, but that's definitely weighing on my mind."
