Govs top Vandy 5-0

Nashville - Mike King (3-2) gave up two hits and struck out three in four innings of work to combine with four other Governor pitchers in shutting out Vanderbilt 5-0 Wednesday, May 1, at Hawkins Field. The win improved Austin Peay's record to 21-23, while Vanderbilt dropped to 19-21 on the season. The loss was Vanderbilt's first in its last five non-conference games.

Following King on the mound for Austin Peay were Stephen Pew, Adam Muston, Dustin Smith and Klint Rommel who combined to no hit the Commodores the rest of the game.

Vanderbilt starter Dean Bennett (1-1) took the loss, allowing four hits and two earned runs in four innings. He also walked three and struck out three.

Austin Peay took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Frank Punich scored from third when Vanderbilt could not turn a potential inning-ending double play off the bat of Ben Fuller.

The Governors pushed their lead to 2-0 in the third when Chris Hyde's double to center field scored A.J. Ellis.

Austin Peay extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth off Commodore reliever Jeff Sues. Michael Johnson's two-run home runand a RBI single by Travis Beech completed the Governors' scoring on the night.

Eight of Austin Peay's nine players in the lineup registered hits. Johnson was 2-for-5 while Ellis went 2-for-4.

Vanderbilt's Chris Broadus extended his career-high and team-best hit streak to 11 games, going 2-for-4.

Vanderbilt travels to Auburn this weekend for a three-game Southeastern Conference series. Game times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with the series finale on SUnday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
