Shan Foster gives Vandy a boost

Vanderbilt's Shan Foster is picking up right where he left off during his freshman season. After a bumpy start, Foster is averaging a team leading 16 points per game and leads the team in 3-point shots made. Sunday afternoon against Auburn, Foster was particularly accurate. His deadly three point shooting helped the Commodores pick up their first conference win of the season.

The Commodores had struggled in the shooting department the past few games. In a 76-67 loss at Georgia Tech on Tuesday Vandy was ice-cold in the second half, hitting only 23 percent of their 13 attempts. Foster felt it was only a matter of time before the shots started falling for Vandy.

"We felt like, in the last couple of games, that we have still been getting good shots but they just were not falling. He had a lot of confidence and knew there are some great shooters on this team. We knew we just needed to keep shooting and the shots eventually fall. My motto is 'the more shots I take, the more shots I make,'" said Foster.

Indeed Foster did shoot more. The six-foot-six sophomore attempted 9 three pointers against the Tigers, making 6 of them. Foster also had a 2-point field goal for a total of 20 points for the Commodores.

During the 2004-05 season the Auburn Tigers ended Vanderbilt hopes for a repeat visit to the NCAA when they upset Vanderbilt. Foster and his fellow Commodores remembered that well and were determined not to allow a loss to Auburn to start the 2005-06 SEC schedule.

"This was the SEC opener and the last time we played them we lost in the SEC Tournament. We came in with the mindset that we wouldn't let that happen again," said Foster.

Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings was happy with Foster's performance but was not surprised.

"We have a lot of guys that played well for us. Shan was like what we expect of him," said the eighth year coach.

Tuesday night Foster and his teammates get another test: The Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena. Top Stories
