Baseball: VU tops USC, 6-2

LOS ANGELES --- Left fielder Matt Meingasner hit a two-run single and started a key double play in the fifth Saturday as the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the No. 25 USC Trojans, 6-2, in day two action at the 2006 Public Storage Classic at Dedeaux Field. San Diego defeated Kansas, 17-6, in earlier action.

The Commodores improved to 1-1 with the win and snapped the Trojans (6-4) six-game winning streak.

USC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single by first baseman Lucas Duda.

The Commodores batted around in the third and scored five run on four hits in the stanza. Third baseman Pedro Alvarez led off the frame with a single up the middle. First baseman Brad French then walked and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by centerfielder Diallo Fon. Second baseman Rucker Taylor singled through the right side scoring Alvarez to tie the game. Shortstop Ryan Flaherty was hit by Trojan starter Ryan Cook to load the bases. Catcher Brian Hernandez then walked on a full count to give the Commodores a 2-1 lead. Leftfielder Matt Meingasner followed with a two-run to center and VU scored another run on a fielding error by USC to make it 5-1.

USC leftfielder Cyle Hankerd's RBI double in the bottom of the third cut the lead to 5-2, but Vanderbilt got the run back in the fourth, courtesy of a RBI single by Flaherty.

Buschmann (1-0) gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He struck out six and walked three in the winning effort. Junior southpaw Stephen Shao closed out the game with three innings of scoreless to pick up the save.

Rucker Taylor and Ryan Davis led the Commodores with two hits each, while Cyle Hankerd had three to lead USC.

Vanderbilt will close out its LA road trip tomorrow against Kansas at noon. The Jayhawks, who came into the weekend 6-2 and ranked 30th in the country, lost their first two games of the tournament by a combined score of 27-7.
