Baseball: 'Dores fall to Kansas in 11, 5-2

LOS ANGELES ­­--- Kansas broke a 2-2 tie game with three runs in the 11th inning to defeat Vanderbilt in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. The Jayhawks snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 7-4 with the win, while the Commodores fell to 1-2 in their opening weekend of play.

Kansas loaded the bases off of reliever Ty Davis (0-1) in the 11th and scored the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly and then added two insurance runs on RBI singles by shortstop Ritchie Price and first baseman Jared Schweitzer.

Reliever Don Czyz (1-0) pitched 5.1 innings of two-hit scoreless relief to pick up the win, while Davis was tagged with the loss. He gave up three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work with three strikeouts.

Vanderbilt loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth and plated two runs when Ryan Davis' grounder to the left side went underneath Kansas third baseman Erik Morrison's legs. First baseman Brian Hernandez opened the inning with a single to left and then stole second. Designated hitter Adam Cronk had an infield single and Pedro Alvarez walked off of KU starter Kodiak Quick to load the bases with two outs. Davis' grounder brought in Hernandez and Greg Del George who had pinch ran for Cronk.

The Jayhawks tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Jared Schweitzer and a bases loaded walk to Ryne Price by reliever Nick Christiani. Ty Davis ended the KU bases loaded scoring threat by striking out Erik Morrison.

VU starter Cody Crowell had a solid start, pitching a shutout through seven innings before tiring in the eighth. He allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of work.

Vanderbilt returns to Nashville and will take on Tennessee Tech in its home opener Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
