The Commodores trailed 2-0 in the seventh when rightfielder Parker Hanks tied the game on a two-run homer to left-center. He finished the night with two hits as did centerfielder David Macias.
"I love the way Parker plays the game," said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. "He plays hard and plays to win."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI groundout by first baseman Brad Miller and then added another run in the fourth on a RBI grounder to third by designated hitter Justin Rogers.
Ben Snyder (1-1) picked up the win for the Cardinals after going seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Kyle Heyne finished the out game for the save with two innings of two-hit relief.
"Snyder is a good pitcher, probably the best we have seen so far this year along with Butler (Josh) from San Diego in the season opener," said Corbin.
Price (0-1) was the tough luck loser as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in eight innings.
"David pitched well enough to win today," said Corbin. "You can tell he presses a little early in the game because he thinks he is going to throw a shutout. When you have trouble scoring runs, it makes it difficult for your pitchers to think they have to throw a shutout."
Nick Christiani closed out the game with an inning of one-hit work in the ninth.
"You can see that we have confidence in Nick because we have brought him into games early in his career as a freshman. It is because of his maturity and his ability to throw strikes and he is going to get the ball late in the game."
The two teams will meet in the second game of the three-game set tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Fans attending the men's basketball game against Tennessee at 1 p.m. can get in for free at the baseball game with their ticket stub.
