Vanderbilt pounds Brown, 11-4

NASHVILLE --- Vanderbilt used a six-run fifth inning to break open a tie game and run past Brown 11-4 in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

The teams were locked in a 4-4 tie before the Commodores erupted for six runs on six hits in the fifth. Parker Hanks started it off with a two-run shot to left-center, his third homer of the year, and Ryan Flaherty then added a two-run double off of the leftfield wall to make it 8-4. Brad French closed out the barrage with a two-run homer of his own, his first of the year.

For the second straight game, VU pounded out a season best 16 hits, including six of the extra base variety.

"Offensively, I was pleased with way we've swung the bats the last two days," said head coach Tim Corbin. "Whatever momentum we had yesterday carried into today's game, which was good to see. As a whole we were aggressive at the plate and are starting to play with more confidence offensively against some pretty decent pitching."

Alex Feinberg added a RBI triple in the seventh to close out the Commodore scoring. Feinberg and Flaherty led the team with three hits each, while David Macias and French chipped in with two hits each.

"We're very happy with Ryan Flaherty and his performance today," said Corbin. "He had a big triple and also added a single and double in his three at-bats. Ryan did a great job at the plate today."

Vanderbilt improved to 8-6 on the year, while Brown fell to 0-5.

The Commodores jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning off of Bear starter Sean McNamara. Ryan Davis had a RBI single, Brad French a sacrifice fly RBI and Brian Hernandez a bases loaded walk to account for the scoring.

Brown got on the board in the third on a RBI single by shortstop Bryan Tews. They then broke out with five hits in the fourth and added three more runs to take a 4-3 lead. Second baseman Paul Christian and first baseman Jeff Dietz had RBI singles, while Dan Shapiro added a RBI groundout off of VU starter Matt Buschmann.

Vanderbilt tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single to right by Brad French.

Buschmann (2-2) allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in five innings of work with four strikeouts and a walk to pick up the win.

McNamara (0-2) gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings in the losing effort.

Cameron Betourne pitched three innings of two-hit scoreless relief and was followed by junior Casey Weathers who closed out the game with an inning of perfect ball in his first outing as a Commodore.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at Noon. Sophomore southpaw Cody Crowell will take the mound for the Commodores.
