The game was tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the tenth when David Macias led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Pedro Alvarez by Brown reliever Alex Silverman (0-1). Brian Hernandez followed with a bunt single to third to load the bases for Parker Hanks who was hit by a pitch to bring in the winning run.
"It was good to get the sweep against a tough Brown team that is better than their record indicates," said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. "They have a lot of experienced and talented players and should challenge for their conference championship later in the year."
Freshman hurler Nick Christiani (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win.
The game was a back and forth affair as the Commodores trailed 7-6 going into the bottom of the ninth. Brown reliever Rob Hallberg retired the first two batters and had two strikes on second baseman Alex Feinberg before he battled back with a single to right-center. Matt Buschmann came on to pinch run for Feinberg and moved to second on leftfielder Ryan Davis' single to right. Designated hitter Ryan Flaherty then delivered a RBI single to center to bring home Buschmann and tie the game at 7-7.
Flaherty finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored and talked about how he has adjusted to the college game.
"In the beginning of the year, it seemed like the game was going so fast and it took a while to get settled in and now the game has slowed down tremendously," said Flaherty.
David Macias and Brian Hernandez led the team with three hits each, while Feinberg, Davis and Brad French each chipped in with two hits on the afternoon.
Rightfielder Paul Christian and infielder Bryan Tews led the Bears with three hits a piece.
Third baseman Pedro Alvarez put the Commodores on the board in the first with his first collegiate homer, a solo shot to right, off of Bear starter Jeff Dietz.
Brown scored four runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead and knock VU starter Cody Crowell out of the game. Crowell gave up four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Bears added another run in the fourth to extend the lead to four, before the Commodores cut it in half in the bottom of the inning on Ryan Flaherty's two-run homer to right, his first of the year.
Vanderbilt then stormed to a 6-5 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Davis had a RBI double and Brad French a RBI single, before Pedro Alvarez' bases loaded walk tied the game.
Brown came back to tie it in the seventh on a two-out RBI double by second baseman Bryan Tews with runners on first and second base. The Commodores avoided giving the Bears the lead on the hit when leftfielder Ryan Davis threw to shortstop Dominic de la Osa who relayed the throw to catcher Brian Hernandez who tagged the go ahead runner out at the plate.
Brown took a 7-6 lead in the ninth on a RBI single by centerfielder Ryan Murphy.
Vanderbilt will close out its 14-game homestand with a two-game series against Butler starting on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Commodores will then open up SEC play against Ole Miss next weekend in Oxford.
