Columbia star favoring two

Isaiah Smith of Columbia-Central High School is a total package defensive player who possesses great speed and good size. Several SEC schools are in early hot pursuit of this fine prospect, including Vanderbilt. Smith has two favorites, read on to find out more.

VandyMania: What are some of your strengths on the field?
Isaiah Smith: My speed and quickness and my size, I guess. I have a pretty good ability to get off the block. I can chase plays down really good, like if a play is going outside, I can pretty much run it down from behind as long is the running back isn't too fast, like a 4.2 or anything like that.

VandyMania: You are a linebacker?
Isaiah Smith: Yes sir, I play defensive end too. I play them both in our defense.

VandyMania: What are you looking for in a school?
Isaiah Smith: First, I'm looking for academics, great academics. Then, like a good football program. Like good recruiting, training and strength and conditioning.

VandyMania: What schools are recruiting you right now?
Isaiah Smith: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Louisville, Middle Tennessee State. I think there's some more like Illinois, and some Ivy League schools like Harvard and Princeton. I have pretty good grades. I already passed the ACT as a sophomore but plan to take it again to increase my score.

VandyMania: Which schools have you visited or are planning on visiting?
Isaiah Smith: I visited Vanderbilt. I went to Alabama during football season this year. I just got back from Auburn Saturday.

VandyMania: Really, how did that go?
Isaiah Smith: It went nice. I watched the A-Day game.

VandyMania: Did you get to talk to the coaches?
Isaiah Smith: Yes sir, I talked to coach Nall a little bit. There was a lot of people there so we didn't really get to spend much one-on-one time.

VandyMania: Do you have any more visits planned?
Isaiah Smith: My spring break is coming up soon, starts on Friday, and I'm planning to go spring games at Vanderbilt and Tennessee. Next month, I think like April 20th, I'll go to Louisville's spring game.

VandyMania: Has anybody offered you yet?
Isaiah Smith: No.

VandyMania: Which schools right now are most exciting to you?
Isaiah Smith: Vanderbilt, Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee. Those are my top four. Vandy and Alabama are tied for first. I really like their campuses and their academics.

VandyMania: What were some of your statistics as a junior?
Isaiah Smith: I played tight end some and had like 20 receptions for 310 yards and 3 touchdowns. On defense I had 60 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 5 sacks.

VandyMania: Sounds outstanding. So have you been working out, getting ready for your senior season?
Isaiah Smith: Yes sir, I'm working hard. I'm in track right now and I'm a sprinter. We have a meet this weekend, Saturday.

VandyMania: What events do you run in track?
Isaiah Smith: The 100 meters, the 200 meters, the 4 by 1, and the 4 by 2. I shot put a little bit. I'm pretty good at that.

VandyMania: Sounds like you are a great athlete. Do you do any other sports?
Isaiah Smith: I used to play basketball but I took a year off to focus on football. I'll probably play again my senior year.

VandyMania: What's your 40 speed?
Isaiah Smith: I was just timed like 3 weeks ago. I ran a 4.44. I run a consistent 4.5.

VandyMania: What's your height-weight?
Isaiah Smith: I'm about six foot, or six one, between those two; and 220 pounds.

Isaiah Smith will attend the Scout.com combine in Louisville on May 20.
