Commodores thrash Auburn, 9-1

NASHVILLE-- Senior righthander Matt Buschmann recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts to lead Vanderbilt to a 9-1 win over Auburn in front of 1,751 fans at Hawkins Field Saturday afternoon.

The Commodores improved to 16-7 overall and won their second straight SEC series to improve to 4-1 on the year. That record is the best start in league play since the 1980 team went 5-1 to open the season.

Buschmann (3-2) extended Vanderbilt's consecutive scoreless inning streak to 38.2 before the Tigers scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the eight. He went 7.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits with 13 strikeouts and two walks.

"I went into the game with the same mentality that David (Price) had yesterday and that was to command my fastball from both sides of the plate with some velocity," said Buschmann. "I thought if I did that I was going to have a good day."

Shea Robin's RBI single in the second gave the Commodores a 1-0 lead. They then put the game away with a five-run third inning. Ryan Flaherty's sacrifice fly plated the first run in the frame and that was followed by a two-run double by Parker Hanks, a RBI triple by Ryan Davis and a RBI double by Robin.

VU added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run single by Hanks and another run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Hanks finished 3-for-3 with four RBI to lead the Vanderbilt 13 hit attack. Pedro Alvarez had three hits, while Dominic de la Osa and Shea Robin both had two hits in the winning effort.

"Parker had a good day today," said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. "He hit the ball hard and he hit it the other way. Dominic did as well, that is their strength. When they start using the whole field they become better hitters."

The Commodores and Tigers will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Sophomore lefthander Cody Crowell will start for VU, while freshman southpaw Evan Crawford will go for Auburn.
