The Hilltoppers then rallied to take the lead with the four-run fourth. They loaded the bases with no outs before Dennis Winn hit a possible double-play grounder to short that was misplayed by Dominic de la Osa leaving everyone safe and allowing a run to score. WKU then added a sacrifice fly RBI and VU starter Cameron Betourne hit a batter with the bases loaded to bring in the fourth run.
Betourne (0-1) gave up four runs, two earned, in 3.1 innings of work. He gave up three hits while walking two and striking out one.
Casey Hamilton's RBI single extended the lead to 5-2 in the fifth.
Matt Meingasner's two-run homer in the seventh, his first of the year, cut the lead to 5-4. The Commodores had the tying run at third with two outs, when Brian Hernandez hit a hard hit ground ball that was snagged by WKU second baseman Matt Ransdell who then threw to first for the final out.
Western Kentucky took advantage of the Commodores fourth error of the night to plate an insurance run in the eighth on Ransdell's RBI double to left.
The Commodores will be back in SEC action this weekend as they visit Gainesville to take on Florida. The teams will open the series at 5:30 p.m. CT on Friday and will then play at a rescheduled time of 1 p.m. CT on Saturday due to the Gators Final Four men's basketball game that evening. They will then close out the set on Sunday at noon CT in a regionally televised game on SUN network.
