Flashback '01: Richmond

The 2001 Richmond-Vanderbilt football game was a dog fight from start to finish. Vanderbilt rallied to take the lead in the second half and then had to hold off a Richmond Spiders rally late in the game to preserve the precious win.

WHAT WENT RIGHT:

Vanderbilt won a football game. The Vandy defense held the Spiders to 169 yards rushing in 51 attempts. The VU offense racked up 350 yards total offense and four touchdowns. Lew Thomas scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and finished with 93 yards.

WHAT WENT WRONG:

Vanderbilt allowed the Division I-AA Richmond Spiders to take a 16-14 lead at the half. After rallying and taking a 28-16 lead into the fourth quarter the Commodores allowed the Spiders back into the game with a late score.
