Walker's homer led off the ninth off of reliever Casey Weathers (0-1). It was the first run he had given up in four previous appearances this season. The Razorbacks added another run on an infield single by Danny Hamblin to extend the lead to 5-3.
Vanderbilt again had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but could not come through as Brad French hit into a fielder's choice and Alex Feinberg struck out to end the game. VU left 12 runners on base in the contest.
"Arkansas is a tough ball club," said Tim Corbin. "I was hoping we would scratch a few more runs out, but we just didn't get it done today."
Razorback starter Nick Schmidt (6-2) struck out 10 in eight innings of work and gave up three runs on nine hits with three walks in the winning effort. Devin Collis recorded the final two outs to record his fifth save of the year.
Commodore starter Cody Crowell gave up three runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings of work with five strikeouts and a walk.
First baseman Danny Hamblin led the Razorbacks with three hits and two RBI.
Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead in the second on Matt Meingasner's single to right field. That lead held until the fifth when Arkansas tied it on Craig Gentry's sacrifice fly RBI.
The Razorbacks took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a RBI double by Danny Hamblin who later scored when he stole home in a double steal.
The Commodores and Razorbacks will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Vanderbilt's starter is still to be determined, while Arkansas will counter with senior southpaw Trey Holloway.
