MTSU downs Vanderbilt, 13-8

MURFREESBORO ­­-- Middle Tennessee wrapped out 14 hits and scored seven runs in the first two innings to run past Vanderbilt 13-8 in front of 2,188 fans Tuesday night at Reese Smith Field.

The Blue Raiders improved to 18-14 on the year, while the Commodores fell to 25-13.

David Macias led off the game with his first career homer. Pedro Alvarez then continued where he left off last week with a line drive shot to rightfield, his 14th of the year and seventh in the last six games.

The Blue Raiders stormed back to take the lead in the bottom half with a three-run inning. Michael McKenry had a sacrifice fly RBI and Adam Warren and Josh Horn had RBI singles to account for the scoring.

MTSU plated four more runs in the second to extend the lead to 7-2. Wayne Kendrick had a two-run triple and Warren and McKenry added RBI singles to lead the way.

The Commodores rallied for four runs in the top of the third to cut the lead 7-6. Pedro Alvarez opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third on Dominic de la Osa's double to left. Ryan Flaherty then had a RBI groundout to second and Brian Hernandez added a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 7-4. Shea Robin walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Ryan Davis' RBI double to center. Alex Feinberg then brought Davis home with a RBI single through the left side.

Todd Martin's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, his ninth of the year, extended the lead to 9-6. Jeff Beechum's three-run double in the fifth extended the lead to 12-6.

Shay Robin and Matt Meingasner hit solo homers in the seventh to cut the lead to 12-8.

Nathan Hines hit a solo homer for Middle Tennessee in the bottom of the inning to make it 13-8.

Tyler Copeland improved to 4-1 on the year after giving up one run on six hits in three innings of work. VU starter Nick Christiani dropped to 2-3 after allowing five runs on six hits in 1.1 innings of action.

Ryan Flaherty and Ryan Davis both had three hits to lead Vandy, while Matt Meingasner, David Macias and Alex Feinberg chipped in with two apiece.

The Commodores will be back in SEC action this weekend as they travel to Tuscaloosa to take on No. 12 Alabama. The series will begin on Friday at 6 p.m. and will continue on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
