Alabama 6 Vanderbilt 5

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- Brandon Belcher's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning concluded a two-run rally to lead Alabama to a 6-5 win over Vanderbilt in SEC baseball action Sunday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Crimson Tide swept the three-game series to improve to 31-12 overall and an SEC best 13-5 in league play. Vanderbilt dropped its fourth straight to fall to 25-16 and 10-8 in conference action.

Kody Valverde led off the eighth inning with a grounder to short that was misplayed by Dominic de la Osa. That error would prove costly for the Commodores, as Evan Bush followed with a walk and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Casey Weathers then came into the game in relief for VU and got pinch hitter Matt Bentley to ground to short. It was slow enough for Valverde to come in and score and tie the game. Belcher then followed with a RBI single up the middle to take the lead.

Vanderbilt made one last rally attempt in the top of the ninth as Matt Meingasner singled and then moved to second when David Macias was hit by a pitch in his second straight at-bat. Alabama then brought in closer David Robertson who struck out Pedro Alvarez for the first out. Dominic de la Osa then hit a grounder to second that second baseman Evan Bush threw to second base to get Macias out. De la Osa beat the throw to first, but third base umpire Fred Cannon called him out due to runners interference at second to end the game.

The Commodores took a 1-0 lead in the first when David Macias, who reached on an infield single, scored on a RBI groundout by Ryan Flaherty.

VU added another run in the second when Shea Robin led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on Ryan Davis' hit and run single through the left side, and then scored on Alex Feinberg's grounder to short.

Matt Downs' two-out RBI single in the third cut the Commodore lead to 2-1.

Vandy got the run back in the fourth on Feinberg's infield RBI single that richocheted off of UA starting pitcher Tommy Hunter, allowing Ryan Flaherty to score from third.

Spencer Pennington's RBI groundout in the bottom half of the inning cut the lead back to one at 3-2.

David Paiml led off the fifth with a double down the right field line that chased Vandy starter Ty Davis out of the game. Stephen Shao came in relief and struck out the first two batters he faced and then got Alex Aliva to line out to left to end the scoring threat.

Davis was effective through four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Tide took the lead in the sixth on Wes Henderson's two-run double that banged off the top of the left field wall.

The Commodores stormed back in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. Matt Meingasner singled with one out and then moved to second when David Macias was hit by a pitch while attempting to bunt. Pedro Alvarez flied out to right and then with two outs Dominic de la Osa delivered the first pitch offering into left-center for a base hit, bringing in Meingasner. Ryan Flaherty followed with a RBI single to right that brought in Macias for the go ahead run.

Vanderbilt returns home for a Tuesday night contest against Austin Peay at 6 p.m., before hosting red-hot Kentucky in a key SEC East series next weekend.
