Golden Tate update

One of Tennessee's top overall players has an early list of six colleges. Vanderbilt is looking good in the race to gain the services of star athlete Golden Tate.

"Right now, I have Vandy, Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Alabama up there. Vandy, Alabama, and Notre Dame are way up there because they are going to let me play football and baseball in college. That is very important to me. I want to play both sports, and I genuinely know they do not mind me doing it."

Which colleges have offered?

"I have offers from Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, Clemson, and Vandy."

In 2005, Golden had 137 carries for 1,027 yards and 11 touchdowns (7.5 yards per carry). He also had 38 receptions for 813 yards and 9 TD's (21.4 yards per catch).

Tate also returned 17 punts for 231 yards (13.6 per return) and 19 kickoffs for 426 yards (22.4 yards per return). He returned three kicks for touchdowns with a long return of 96 yards. For his career, Tate has 60 touchdowns, 2,170 rushing yards 1,735 receiving and 10 interceptions. For his 2005 performance, he was named Mr. Football in Tennessee.

So what makes this multidimensional player so special?

"My speed (4.42 forty) and my quickness are probably my biggest strengths. I can change directions pretty fast. That helps me make people miss and get to the corner."

And what will Golden need to work on for the next level?

"I need to grow and get a little stronger (250 bench/405 squat)."

Which colleges have come to Golden's spring practices?

"I do not go through spring drills because of baseball. I do text message some schools though. That is pretty much how I keep up with them and they keep up with me."

Which colleges does Golden text message?

"I really do not know their names, just the schools. I text South Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Vandy. Those are the ones that come off of the top of my head."

Golden carries a 3.1 GPA and just took the ACT test two Saturdays back.
