Scouting South Carolina
South Carolina is 35-18 on the year and 14-13 in the SEC after dropping two of three to Tennessee last weekend in Columbia. The Gamecocks were ranked No. 1 at one point this season and had a 26-3 overall record and 8-1 league mark on April 2 after sweeping LSU in Baton Rouge. Since that time they have gone 9-15 overall and 5-12 in league play. Centerfielder Michael Campbell leads the team with a .359 batting average, while Robbie Grinestaff is the top power source with 14 homers and 50 RBI. USC is hitting .314 as a team with 70 homers and 405 runs scored in 53 games (7.6 per game). South Carolina's rotation this weekend will be righthanders Wynn Pelzer (4-3, 2.98 ERA) on
Thursday, Mike Cisco (5-3, 4.14 ERA) on Friday and southpaw Will Atwood (4-1, 4.19 ERA) on Saturday. As a team, the Gamecocks have a 4.19 ERA with 452 strikeouts and 183 walks in 478.2 innings. Series Notes: Vanderbilt won the season series last year for the first time since the 1996 season in Nashville (year prior to Ray Tanner taking over) ... USC went 22-2 against the Commodores since that time before losing two of three last year in Columbia ... 1996 and 2004 are the only two times the Commodores have won the season series ... VU is 3-18 against USC in Nashville.
Commodore Tidbits
Vanderbilt reached the 30 win mark for the third straight season under head coach Tim Corbin, marking the first time that has been done since Larry Schmittou's Commodores did it five years in a row (1971-75) … The Commodores hit .359 in the four games last week with eight homers and 38 runs scored and are now hitting a season high .303 as a team ... The pitching staff allowed 23 runs and had a 5.91 ERA ... Brian Hernandez went 8-for-16 on the week with two homers, two doubles, nine RBI and six runs scored … Ryan Davis was 7-for-20 (.350) on the week with a homer,
double and seven RBI. He had a career day with five hits in the win on Saturday over LSU and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle … Shea Robin had a hit in all four games this week to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. He went 8-for-18 with two doubles, a homer, five RBI and four runs scored … David Macias was 7-for-16 (.438) with five runs scored. He also walked four times and had a .524 on base percentage … Brad French got his second SEC start of the year on Saturday at first base and delivered with three hits, including a three-run homer to cap a seven run first inning. He was 3-for-7 (.429) with a homer and four RBI offensively, while also playing a spotless first in 18 chances … Pedro Alvarez hit his team leading 15th homer in Wednesday's contest against Lipscomb. He finished 6-for-17 (.353) on the week with six runs scored … David Price notched his seventh win of the year in Saturday's win over LSU. He gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings of work with eight strikeouts, that gave him 130 for the year, one shy of the school record of 131 set by Doug Wessel in 1971 … Tyler Rhoden moved to 3-0 on the year after picking up the win in Sunday's contest … Freshman Nick Christiani recorded his third save of the year in Sunday's win. He pitched three scoreless innings with a walk and three strikeouts … Senior Matt Buschmann had his second straight quality start without getting the win in Friday's loss to LSU. He held the Tigers to two runs on five hits in seven innings of work and left the game with a 3-1 lead in the eighth … The Commodores 19 runs scored against LSU on Saturday was the most by the school since scoring 19 against Central Michigan in 2003. It was the most in SEC play since scoring 19 against Alabama in the 1992 season. The win was the biggest in terms of run differential against LSU in school history … The series win over LSU was the first over the Tigers since the 2003 season and second series win in the last three trips to Baton Rouge (won two in 2002) … VU won three of its five SEC series on the road this season … the series win was the first since taking two of three against Georgia in Nashville (April 14-16) (had lost three in a row since).
