It's August in Nashville, so it wasn't a surprise that the day was hot and humid. Ice cold bottled-water with commemorative labels helped keep everybody hydrated through the heat of the day.
Members of the danceline were part of the "Move Crew" that helped the freshmen move into Branscomb. In all, nearly 800 Vanderbilt students and staff members volunteered to help on Moving In Day. (Click on image to view a larger version.)
Late in the afternoon, the freshmen and transfer students lined up on 24th Avenue for the annual Founders Walk. This year for the first time the Founders Walk was held on Moving In Day to allow parents to participate.
Freshmen Justin Green, Jared Funk, Kikko Logan, Myron Lewis are among the 33 newcomers to the football team.
Mallory Hitt, a sprinter and high jumper from Louisiana, posed for a photos with Track & Field Coach Lori Shepard.
Jermaine "Dolla" Beal and JeJuan Brown are the freshmen on the men's basketball team.
Ashlee Bridge and Jessica Mooney from the women's basketball team posed with Kikko Logan, Myron Lewis and Brent Trice from the football team.
In previous years, students lined up for the procession in parking lots next to the Vanderbilt gates. This year the lineup on 24th Avenue meant a longer walk down West End, and for the first time, a bagpiper led the procession.
After entering the campus through the gates on West End, the procession continues towards Kirkland Hall. Freshmen football players Austin Newton and Kikko Logan wave to the crowd lining the driveway.
Head football Coach Bobby Johnson, Director of Sports Operations Brian Reese, and football team co-captain Brian Stamper were part of the football contingent cheering for the newcomers.
The soccer team freshmen continued the tradition of throwing candy to their teammates. On Friday, the team battled to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition game against Missouri. Their regular season begins this Friday August 25, when Colorado visits the VU Soccer Complex for a 7:30 p.m. CT contest. (Click on image to view a larger version.)
The fall season for the women's golf team begins the weekend of September 15-17 at the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. (Click on image to view a larger version.)
Jessica Mooney and Amber Norton, freshmen on the women's basketball team, smiled as they walked past the Spirt of Gold band.
The Spirt of Gold has been been preparing for the season with three-a-day practices this week. For the first time, the band will have more than 200 members this yaer.
The Walk ends on Currey Field in front of Wilson Hall for the official welcoming speeches by Chancellor Gordon Gee and other university dignitaries.
Afterwards, students and families were invited to a picnic on Alumni Lawn. Caleb Cotham, a right-handed pitcher from Mt. Juliet, and outfielder Steven Liddle from Franklin, were among the attendees.
Although an approaching line of bad weather threatened to force festivities to move inside, a good time was had by all.
