22 Vandy freshmen play at Michigan

The Vanderbilt Commodores had 22 freshmen see their first college action on Saturday in Ann Arbor. VandyMania takes a look at some of the accomplishments of those freshmen.

(RS)= redshirt, (T)= true

Ryan Hamilton (RS) safety- Hamilton saw significant action as a safety. The Pennsylvania native had 1 assisted and 1 unassisted tackle.

Darlron Spead (RS) cornerback- Spead had 2 unassisted tackles. In the second half Spead broke up a pass that he could have easily intercepted.

Sean Walker (RS) wide receiver- Walker had an 11-yard reception that setup Vanderbilt's trick play which scored.

D.J. Moore (True) cornerback- Moore excelled on special teams. He almost caused a turnover in the first half but was called for a controversial penalty.

Alex Washington (RS) kick returner- Washington was a pleasant surprise as a returner. Displaying lightning speed, he had 4 returns for a total of 91 yards including a long of 34 yards. He looks like he'll break at least one for long touchdown run this season.

Patrick Benoist (T) linebacker- Benoist served as a backup linebacker and had 1 unassisted tackle.

Jared Hawkins (RS) tailback- Hawkins had a couple of option carries in the second half. The speedy Texan had 2 carries for 18 yards including a long gain of 11 yards.

Chris Johnson (RS) linebacker- Johnson had 1 unassisted tackle on a punt return.

Matt Quinn (T) longer snapper- Quinn did a great job snapping to fellow freshman Brett Upson.

Broderick Stewart (RS) defensive end- Stewart had 2 unassisted tackles on the day. The speedy end also had Vanderbilt's only sack of the day on Michigan quarterback Chad Henne.

Brett Upson (T) punter- Upson's fine performance at punter helped Vandy limit Michigan's great return game. He had 7 punts for a 37-yard average. He also had a 47 yarder. Upson showed good hang time as evidenced by the fact that only one of his punts was actually returned for positive yardage.

Other Vanderbilt freshmen who registered their first college game action on Saturday included Brent Trice (T) safety; Eric Hensley (RS) offensive line; Ryan Custer (RS) offensive line; Nick Miller (RS) long snapper; Justin Wheeler (RS) wide receiver; Matt Quin, long snapper; Jake Bradford (RS) tight end; Thomas Welch (RS) tight end; Steven Stone (RS) defensive end; Greg Billinger (T) defensive tackle.

Late Note: Mackenzi Adams (RS) also saw action in the Michigan game. He served as holder on Vanderbilt's lone extra point attempt. Adams snagged a high snap and may have salvaged a Vanderbilt point. Adam's name did not appear in the official Vanderbilt boxscore player participation list.
