School Preferences: Nebraska, Tennessee, Memphis, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt
Profile 2003 - Melvin Cole (RB)
Melvin Cole got a late start last year, but he still managed to gain 550 yards on only 55 carries as a junior. "I had to sit out half of last year because of some transfer rule," said Cole. "Then I tweaked my ankle a bit, and missed some more time. So I really only got to play in about 1/4 of the season."
Cole sounds as if he is chomping at the bit to get on the field this year and show what he can do over the course of a full season. As well he should. With a 10.0 ypc average last year, he is looking for a huge year. He has excellent strength honed by endless hours in the weight room, and his personal best 40 time was a 4.39.
"I went to the Memphis and the Ole Miss camps this summer. I don't have any offers yet, but I really like Nebraska, Tennessee, Memphis, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt."
If Cole is to keep that lofty average this year, he is going to have to earn it the hard way. Briarcrest is replacing 25 seniors from last year's team including 4 of 5 offensive linemen. "We lost a lot of seniors, but we've got some young guys coming up that are working hard in the weight room this summer. We should be all right."
Having Melvin Cole in the backfield for a full season would be a bonus to any team, and Cole is looking forward to the challenge this year.
