Football: Wednesday practice report

The Vanderbilt Commodores continued their two-a-day practice schedule on Wednesday. The team conducted a game like scrimmage during the second practice before having the session cut short as a precautionary measure due to rain and lightning.

Today was a rainy day for Vandy Practice. When the players came out to stretch for the morning practice it was raining. The rain stopped before the team got too far into practice but it still made for wet conditions.

During the team scrimmage part of practice Dominique Morris put on a show. He intercepted two passes and both times made excellent plays to get to the ball.

On the first play of the scrimmage quarterback Benji Walker hit Jason Bourque on a screen pass for a huge gain. Toward the end of the practice Ryan Cuffee made a great diving catch that had coaches yelling for him to hold the ball up to show he caught it.

The afternoon practice had the most scrimmage time of any practice so far. For the last hour the team practiced under game like conditions with officials and down markers.

Ian Gaines had the longest run of the scrimmage when he made several cutbacks to go 30 yards. Matthew Tant also had some nice runs and showed that he is not afraid to put his nose in the pile and gain the hard earned yards. The offense did not score a touchdown during the scrimmage but they did get a field goal by Chuck Folino in the rain.

Coach Johnson called practice as the rain got harder and there was thunder and lightning in the area. One highlight of the practice was watching Greg Johnson and Chuck Folino kick off. Both put several deep with good hang time. The best kick was from Johnson, the ball landed on the awning on McGugin Center. Top Stories
