Tuesday Practice Update

The Vanderbilt Commodores continued preseason drills in preparation for the 2002 football season.

Tuesday's practice was very hot. Vanderbilt practiced on the grass field (The first time ever) for most of the time, probably because of the heat. The special teams worked on on-side kicks and kickoffs.

During the scrimmage part of practice junior quarterback Benji Walker and freshman quarterback Jay Cutler were both splitting time as signal callers. Walker had nice completions to Dan Stricker and red shirt freshman Keith Williams. Two of Cutler's best passes were completions to sophomore Brandon Smith.

Senior All-American candidate Dan Stricker dropped one of Jay Cutler's finest passes of the day. This must have frustrated Dan. Later, during the last play of the scrimmage before they took a break, Stricker went on an out route toward the soccer stadium. The ball was overthrown but Sticker caught up to it, took one step, ran over a tackling dummy, and into the fence of the soccer stadium. He got up slow, but returned for the rest of practice.

Practice ended with the team working on goal-line situations. Both sides of the ball were fired up and gave all they had to beat the other side. The best play on the goal line came on a bootleg from Benji Walker. As Walker rounded the corner sophomore tight end Dustin Dunning (6-5, 235) turned back for a huge block on senior free safety Justin Giboney (6-0, 203) allowing Walker to walk into the end zone.
