Austin Monahan Update

VandyMania talked with Austin Monahan who has been attending Phillips Academy in Anvdover, Mass. Monahan originally signed with Vanderbilt in February 2006 but opted to attend post grad school at Phillips.

VandyMania: How did your postgraduate season at Phillips turn out?
Austin Monahan: Our season went very well at Andover, we went 7-0 in the regular season, and the way its done up here is the top team from each league meets for the New England Championship Bowl Game. We lost to Salisbury in the NE Class A Bowl game, 14-19. As an individual I had a great season. At Tight End I had 36 Catches for 536 yards, and 7 touchdowns. I also had 3 Two Point Conversions. At Defensive End, I had 28 tackles, 8 sacks, and 3 Fumble Recoveries. It has been a great year so far. I have had a great year so far as a post grad. On the field, I played mainly a big slot receiver, TE, and DE. I was also on half the special teams, so I hardly came off the field.

VM: What is your status with Vanderbilt?
AM: I have reclassed to the 2007 class, and am still committed with Vanderbilt.

VM: How are you doing height/weight wise?
AM: I am 6'7" and 236 now.

VM: Have other schools been pursuing you?
AM: My other offers were from Duke, Elon, and UNC were pressing me hard, but didn't offer because I told them I was committed to Vanderbilt.

VM: How are things going academically?
AM: In the classroom, since I have already completed all my high school requirements, I have been taking classes that will be beneficial to me in the future, and classes that I am interested in. (Business Applications, Computer Media, AP Calculus BC, English, Public Speaking, etc.)

VM: Have you been hearing from the Vanderbilt coaches?
AM: They (Coach Johnson, and Cain) came to visit me at home when I was on break, and that was really nice. Also, my recruiting coach (Coach Belin) came to visit me while I was on break for Thanksgiving, and he also came up the 18th to meet for a little bit before I went down there on my official, the 19th. Ill report to Vanderbilt during summer session (whichever one works, I'm thinking June 5th). I'm looking forward to being able to contribute to a great program.
