Baseball: VU overpowers Alumi Team, 6-2

NASHVILLE-- The Vanderbilt baseball conducted its annual Vanderbilt Alumni game at Hawkins field on Saturday. A squad of 20 Vanderbilt baseball alumni, most of them active minor league players, were on hand for the game. Warner Jones, Worth Scott, Jonathan Douillard, Ryan Rote, and Willy Daunic were among the alums that participated. Cleveland Indian pitcher Jeremy Sowers did not participate.

A crowd of over 100 Commodore fans enjoyed the sunny weather and February baseball as the varsity team prevailed 6-2 over the Alums.

Antoan Richardson (2004-05) got things going for the alumni team with a one out single in the first. However, Mike Baxter's (2004-05) tap to pitcher David Price ended the first inning for the alumni.

Jensen Lewis (2003-05) started on the mound for the alumni team and retired the first three varsity batters in the initial inning.

A varsity double play ended the alumni second. Junior Jonathon White singled in the varsity first but Lewis retired the next varsity batter to preserve the scoreless tie.

No alumni player reached base in the third as Price registered his third strike out of the game.

Brad French singled to right field to start the varsity third. Ryan Davis' 2-run homer scored French. Back to back doubles by juniors David Macias and Alex Feinberg made it 3-0. Feinberg later scored on a Pedro Alvarez single and throwing error to make it 4-0. Relief pitcher Ryan Rote then finished out the inning for the varsity.

The varsity added 2 runs in the 7th inning pull out the 6-2 victory in 8 innings.

David Price pitched 4.2 innings striking out 5 while giving up 4 hits and 2 runs to pick up the win. Jensen Lewis took the loss for the alumni squad.

The Commodores will leave for Houston, Texas on Thursday morning and open the 2007 Vanderbilt baseball season when they face the Rice Owls.
