Baseball: Vanderbilt 8 Austin Peay 0

NASHVILLE-- Vanderbilt pitcher Mike Minor struck out 8 and Pedro Alvarez belted 4 hits as the Commodores shut out Austin Peay, 8-0.

Vandy wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring 2 runs in the first inning off an Alvarez single and a Dominic de la Osa double. After a scoreless second inning, Vanderbilt added 2 more runs in the third as Andrew Giobbi singled to right field scoring Brian Harris. Ryan Davis later reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Alvarez.

In the fifth inning Alvarez, who just missed a cycle game, scored on a wild pitch after tripling to get on base making the score 5-0. Alvarez had 2 doubles, the triple and a single during the game to raise his batting average to .458.

Vanderbilt added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to put the game away.

Minor (1-0) pitched 8 innings scattering 3 hits and walking just one. He had about 100 pitches on the night, primarily fastballs and change ups. Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin was pleased with Minor's performance, "For a young kid that is as good of a game as I've seen pitched here. It was more of an outing of a junior or senior, probably; lot of strikes, pitching inside with his fast ball, keeping them off balance with his changeup, inducing weak contact throughout the game; that's what a pitcher strives to do," commented Corbin.

Cody Crowell relieved Minor in the ninth, striking out one batter. Shawn Kelley (1-1) took the loss for the Governors.

Vanderbilt (11-0) hosts Xavier next for a Friday, Saturday, Sunday series.
