Razorback players talk about Vandy rematch

ATLANTA, Ga.-- Arkansas pulled away in the second half for an 82-52 victory over South Carolina Thursday in the opening round of the SEC Tournament. The Razorbacks (19-12) advanced to face Vanderbilt (20-10) Friday at 2:15 pm CT in the quarterfinal round at the Georgia Dome. Several Razorbacks talked Thursday about the rematch with Vandy, a team which Arkansas defeated last Saturday.

Arkansas is suddenly a hot team, having won three straight games, including last Saturday's 82-67, regular season-concluding win over Vanderbilt in Nashville. Following Thursday's win over South Carolina, several members of Stan Heath's Razorback squad talked about the next day's matchup with Vanderbilt.

Arkansas forward Patrick Beverley:

"There's some good and some bad about turning around and playing Vanderbilt again so fast. It's good because we beat them, and we should be going in there with a lot of confidence. But at the same time, we beat theme on their senior day, so they've got to be amped up to play us again. We've just got to come in focused and continue playing the kind of basketball that we've been playing. If we do, the ball game ought to fall into our hands."

Forward Sonny Weems:

"We beat Vanderbilt on their home floor on their senior night, and you know they are going to come in here and want revenge. We've just got to match their intensity level, and act like we've never played them before.

"[Vanderbilt] is a great 3-point shooting team. We will have to get out on those 3-point shooters... we'll just have to man up and hold our own with those great 3-point shooters, and play solid defense."

Forward Darian Townes:

"We feel like we can win the whole SEC Tournament. We just want to take it one game at a time. We've shown a lot of teams that we can play with the best. We beat LSU when they were ranked, and Alabama when they were ranked. We just have to go out with our minds right. It's a good time for us to do it now, even though we should have done it a little bit earlier. But that's how basketball is, it's up and down.

"It showed today [in the win over South Carolina]. We had a season-low four turnovers. That's really big.

"We've got a big game coming up tomorrow. Vanderbilt is going to want it a little bit more, because we beat them on their senior night. They're going to be really pumped up. But we've got a lot of momentum on our side too. It's going to be a dogfight tomorrow.

"Vanderbilt is a terrific shooting team. It's going to be a big game for the perimeter. We big guys are going to have to help them out with that. It's going to be a dogfight on the rebounding end. It's going to come down to who wants it more, just like it did today."
