Vanderbilt (0-1) opens its home schedule Saturday evening against Furman (0-0) (6:00 pm, no TV locally). VandyMania talked with quarterback Jay Cutler and middle linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer about the upcoming game.
VandyMania: Jay, you've now gotten your fist college game behind you. What were your thoughts and impressions? Did anything really surprise you about it?
Jay Cutler: I thought [Georgia Tech] had a lot of speed out there. I had to adjust to that, from the first play. But after that, it was what I thought it would be. They really didn't throw anything different at me. We just didn't execute, and that's the bottom line.
VandyMania: What went through your mind when it came down on the Sunday before the Georgia Tech game that you'd be starting?
Jay Cutler: I was happy! I was excited. I was a little nervous of course, to be getting my first start as a redshirt freshman. But I'm glad to have my first game under my belt. We just need to improve. We can only go up from there.
VandyMania: Do you think that opening loss will shake the team's confidence going into the Furman game?
Jay Cutler: No. It think it's going to put a chip on our shoulder, if anything. We know we have to improve. There's no doubt about it. We've made a lot of corrections after watching the film. I felt very comfortable out there.
VandyMania: As a senior, how do you keep the team from getting down after a game like Georgia Tech?
Hunter Hillenmeyer: You've got to look at the big picture. This was just the first of twelve games, hopefully more than that. We plan to pick up the pieces, and come out and win the next week. That's why you play a whole season, not just one game.
