Texas speedster picks Vanderbilt

The Vanderbilt staff received their fifth commit today when Springtown High School (Texas) WR/S Al Owens has made up his mind to be a Commodore. VandyMania talked with Springtown head coach Brad Turner about Owens and his game.

Al Owens Profile

"Yes, he committed to Vanderbilt," said a happy Springtown head coach Brad Turner of his star wide receiver/safety.

"He is a tall, fast, physical safety, which is a pretty hot commodity in the college ranks. The Divison I guys are wanting big tall rangy physical safeties. He's 6'2 195 and 4.4 speed. He is very intelligent; Stanford, Duke, Virginia , SMU, Wake Forest, those schools also offered him. They are getting a good one."

"He had right at 90 tackles, two interceptions on defense. He will cross over and play some offense also. He is so fast we will use him in the backfield, hand the ball to him," continued Turner.

Early in Owen's junior year InsideTexas.com's Jared Gravette had this to say about Owens, "Springtown junior Al Owens has a bright future in front of him. His size, speed and aggressiveness make him one of the most sought after safety prospects in the state of Texas."

Owens Camped at Kansas State during the summer between his sophomore and junior years and was timed at 4.47 in the forty by the Wildcat staff. He earned All-District honors during both his sophomore and junior seasons.
