Even with the departure of Chris Booker one of the brightest spots on the defense could be at end. Curtis Gatewood returns as a starter after posting 7 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 36 solo tackles. Gatewood has received preseason accolades from several publications based upon his performance last season. His speed on the edge is comparable with any defensive end in the SEC.

Broderick Stewart (photo right) and Steven Stone (photo lower left) both contributed last year and saw action in every game. Stewart totaled 5 sacks and 19 tackles while Stone racked up 6.5 tackles for loss and 24 total tackles.

The staff will be looking to David Whittington, Teriall Brannon and Kikko Logan to provide some depth and will hopefully get some quality minutes from at least a couple of them. All three have been working hard to get their chance on the field. While overall depth is in question at end, there appears to be some untested talent ready to step up and compete.

Newcomers Robert Ashabranner and Theron Kadri hope to see some playing time during the 2007 season. Kadri has impressed the coaching staff during preseason drills and could see action. Ashabranner has a great future ahead of him at Vandy but will likely be redshirted.
