AREA GRADE COMMENTS
PASSING OFFENSE
C-
Could have been much better. Four interceptions is certainly not good. On the bright side, Chris Nickson threw two touchdown passes and Earl Bennett had 9 catches, including one of the TD passes. Sean Walker had the other.
RUSHING OFFENSE
B-
Cassen Jackson-Garrison had 76 yards in 23 carries. His longest run went for 14 yards. Nickson gained 67 yards in just 12 carries. Not too bad but could have been a little better.
PASSING DEFENSE
A
Five interceptions! Wow, when is the last time we've seen those kind of numbers? Vanderbilt defenders caught more passes from EMU quarterbacks than any of the Eagle receivers did.
RUSHING DEFENSE
A
62 yards rushing? Nice job by the defense. Brandon Bryant, a linebacker was the top tackler for Vandy with 7. A defensive lineman, Steven Stone, was the second leading Commodore tackler with 6. Those are healthy numbers. No defensive backs leading in tackles (they were too busy catching passes from EMU's quarterbacks).
SPECIAL TEAMS
A
Kicker Bryant Hahnfeldt is starting to look like his old self. He made 3 of 4 including a 45-yarder. Brett Upson's punting average wasn't spectacular but his only two punts were downed inside the EMU 20-yard-line which is a good thing. D.J. Moore had an excellent kickoff return that gave Vanderbilt superb field position.
COACHING
B
Great work getting the team ready for a game they were expected to win handily. It wasn't pretty at times but in the end they did win handily.
OVERALL GRADE
B
Hey, they got the win. That's what matters in the end. Fix the bad passes this week in practice. The Commodores travel to hostile Auburn, Ala. next week for a meeting with the Tigers, who just upset the defending National Champion Florida Gators. The passing errors can't be repeated.
