Following a precedent set by Stallings for the last two seasons, the team will hold no late-night "Midnight Madness" event on Friday night, but will rest up instead and commence practice on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's practice will be the first for five scholarship freshmen-- Bryson Krueger, Mario Moore, Adam Payton, Ted Skuchas and Julian Terrell-- as well as one invited walk-on freshman-- Geoff Peck, a 6-6 forward from Norman, Okla.
The Commodores have no seniors on the squad other than walk-on Matt Carter, but the team returns eight scholarship players from last year's 16-14 National Invitational Tournament team. The eight returnees are Matt Freije, Jason Holwerda, Scott Hundley, Russell Lakey, David Przybyszewski, Martin Schnedlitz, Corey Smith and Brian Thornton.
Stallings, entering his fourth season as Vanderbilt's head coach, has much scoring to replace from last season, as the team's second, third and fourth leading scorers (Chuck Moore, Brendan Plavich, Sam Howard) have all departed. Also gone is four-year player Darius Coulibaly.
The Commodores' first exhibition game is Monday, Nov. 11, against the Harlem Globetrotters at Memorial Gym. The Commodores meet the New York Upstate Allstars in another exhibition on Nov. 15, before opening the regular-season schedule at home against Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 22.
