W. Golf: Courtney Wood leads at Stanford

Stanford, Calif. - The #2-ranked Vanderbilt women's golf team is currenty in fourth place and junior Courtney Wood is tied for the lead after first round action of the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate Tournament.

The Commodores shot a 302, and are nine shots behind leader UCLA (293). Washington is in second place with a round of 295, followed by California with a 296.

The tournament is being played at the Stanford Golf Course (5,903, par 72).Wood shot a 71 (-1) and is in a tie for the lead with New Mexico State's Alena Sharp, California's Vikki Laing, and Georgia's Kelly Froelich. Junior Sarah Jacobs is in a tie for 11th place with a round of 74 (+2).

Sophomore Veronica Yatco, making her first team appearance for the Commodores, shot a 77 (+5) and is in a tie for 30th place, followed by senior Nicki Cutler and freshman May Wood who both shot an 80 (+8 /T59)."Courtney and Sarah had great rounds today and Veronica really stepped up and helped us out today," Head Coach Martha Freitag. "Sometimes you need your fifth player to do that."

"Nicki and May hit the ball well today, but they had a tough time putting. I'm confident that we'll play a lot better tomorrow." Freitag added.

The Commodores team up with Georgia and Stanford tomorrow for an 8:45 am PT tee time."The conditions are absolutely perfect. This course is set up like a championship golf course should be," Freitag said. "It's very tough and very challenging, but also very fair."The Tournament concludes Sunday (Oct. 20) with an 8:30 am PT shotgun start.
