The media picked the Vanderbilt women to finish third overall in the conference behind Tennessee and LSU, while the Commodore men were picked to finish sixth in the Eastern Division.

The media picked Vanderbilt's Chantelle Anderson as women's preseason Player of the Year, and also named her the center on the preseason first-team All-SEC team. No member of the Vanderbilt men's team was named first-team or second-team All-SEC.

Vanderbilt's men's team was represented by junior forward Matt Freije and junior guard Russell Lakey, in addition to head Kevin Stallings. The Commodore women were represented by senior center Chantelle Anderson and senior guard Ashley McElhiney, as well as first-year head coach Melanie Balcomb.
