Baseball: Commodores Pound Catamounts 11-4

The Vanderbilt Commodores (10-3) got home runs from David Macias and Curt Casali to power an 11-4 win over the Catamounts of Western Carolina (4-9) on Wednesday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

"It was first and third, one out, and he left it above my lap and I got a good piece on it," said Macias on the homer. "To tell you truth, I thought it was going to hit off the wall so I just kept running and fortunately it went out."

Vanderbilt fell behind early when Blake Murphy hit a two run homer in the top of the first inning.

The Commodores would get those runs back in the bottom of the first. After Macias lined out to start the inning, Alex Feinberg singled to center field. Ryan Flaherty was the next hitter to the plate and he flew out to third base. After a Dominic de la Osa walk, Andrew Giobbi doubled to right center to score Feinberg and de la Osa.

The Commodores would get three runs in the bottom of the third on Macias's three run homer with two outs.

Casali's two run homer came in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Commodores 7-2 lead. Vandy's offense would be quiet until adding two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Mark Lamm started the game for the Commodores and went three innings. He gave up three runs on two hits, three walks and struck out two. Taylor Hill (1-0) came in to relieve Lamm and pitched two scoreless innings without giving up a hit to get his first win of the season. Brett Jacobson closed out the game for the Commodores.

The Commodores chased Catamount's starting pitcher, Tyler Sexton (0-2), after just 2 1/3 innings. They lit him up for seven runs on seven hits.

Vanderbilt will take Thursday off before the South Carolina Gamecocks come to Hawkins Field on Friday to open Southeastern Conference play. The Friday night game starts at 6 p.m. Top Stories
