Baseball: Commodores Win Game One 4-3 in 13

Ryan Flaherty gave the Commodores a 1-0 start to Southeastern Conference play Friday night at Hawkins Field. He tied the game in the ninth with a solo home run and then hit a walk off single in the thirteenth to give the Commodores a 4-3 win over South Carolina.

"It's something I have always wanted since I was a little kid, whether it was football, basketball or baseball, to have the ball when the game is on the line," said Flaherty. "I was fortunate I had a couple of opportunities tonight and I was successful. I have had other opportunities where I came up short, so it feels good when you come out on top."

The Commodores were able to strike first getting a run in the bottom of the third when Andrew Giobbi singled to center field to score Flaherty.

The Gamecocks would get that run back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Whit Merrifield.

The Commodores would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Dominic de la Osa grounded out to shortstop scoring Brian Harris.

The Gamecocks would push across one run in the top of the eight and one run in the top of the ninth to set up Flaherty first heroic moment of the night when he tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two out solo home run.

Neither team would score again until the thirteenth inning. Harris walked with one out and was advanced to second when David Macias singled. Flaherty was the next batter to the plate and his single to right field drove home Harris for the 4-3 win.

The Commodores got a great effort from starting pitcher Mike Minor who pitched 8 2/3 innings giving up 6 hits, 3 runs, and 1 walk while striking out 10 in a no decision. Russell Brewer (2-0) got the win for the Commodores by pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Commodores will take on the Gamecocks in game two of the three game set Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
