Baseball: Vandy falls to Alabama 10-3

The Vanderbilt Commodores (14-6, 3-3) lost their first Southeastern Conference series of the season when they fell 10-3 to the Alabama Crimson Tide (11-11, 2-4) in Tuscaloosa on Sunday afternoon. The Crimson Tide pounded out 11 hits in route to the victory.

The Commodores took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ryan Flaherty hit a two out home run to right field.

Vanderbilt's lead won not last long however. The Crimson Tide got four runs in the bottom of the first inning with three of those runs coming on a Kent Matthes home run to center field off Commodore starter Taylor Hill. Hill had a rough afternoon giving up seven runs in just four innings of work. He gave up five hits, one walk and struck out three.

The Crimson Tide would add another run on a solo home run by Alex Avila in the bottom of the third inning to push their lead to 5-1.

The scoring would continue for Alabama in the bottom of the fifth when they added two more runs on two hits. Hill would start the fifth inning but would not record an out. He was relieved by Russell Brewer. Brewer pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up 3 unearned runs on the afternoon.

Alabama would cap their ten run afternoon with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Commodores would get their final two runs of the afternoon in the top of the eight inning on a two run home run by David Macias that scored Brian Harris who had reached on an error.

Vanderbilt heads back to Nashville to take on the Belmont Bruins on Tuesday night at Hawkins Field. That game starts at 6 p.m. The Commodores will then take on the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night. They will resume SEC play on Friday night when the Arkansas Razorbacks come to Nashville at 6 p.m.
