Sloppy fielding and a 4-run Oklahoma fourth inning helped lead the Sooners to an 8-5 win over Vandy today in the NCAA Tempe regional at Arizona State University. UPDATE: In the late game Arizona State defeated Stony Brook, 9-7, so the Commodores will face Stony Brook at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday.
The Sooners took advantage of a Commodore throwing error in the first inning to score a run. Vandy answered with 2 runs of its own in the first but that would be all the Commodore scoring until the seventh inning when the Sooners led, 7-2.
Caleb Cotham threw 5 and 2/3 inning giving up 9 hits and 5 earned runs. Vandy's Brett Jacobson pitched 3 innings in relief striking out 3 and allowing just one run, a one-run homer by Mke Gosse.
Oklahoma's Andrew Doyle pitched 6 innings scattering 9 hits and striking out two.
Vandy pulled with 8-5 in the seventh when David Macias followed up hits by Alex Feinberg and Jonathan White with a home run. Macias also had two singles during the game.
Vandy, 40-21, will now play the loser of the Arizona State and Stony Brook game, which will be played later tonight, on Saturday.
